4 Natural Cures for Headaches I Learned From Being on the Dr. Oz Show

Last week, I had the pleasure of being a guest on the Dr. Oz show! I have to say that I was much more nervous watching the show, than I was during the actual taping. LOL While I had such a fun time on the show, I was even more excited to learn about some natural cures for my headaches. I’m not one that likes to take medicine, but when my headaches turn to migraines, I definitely have no choice (actually, I have a small window of opportunity to shut it down before it reaches full blown migraine status). When I suffer, the whole family suffers so I’m eager to try out these natural/preventative cures.

When you’re so used to dealing with something such as frequent headaches and migraines, it’s easy to forget that it’s not really normal. So being on Dr. Oz with Suzy Cohen reminded me that this is one area of self-care that I’d been neglecting. Walking around with migraine medicine in my purse at all times is really not okay. So I’m going to start taking a proactive approach starting with these four natural cures.

1. Cool Down Ade (green smoothie)

  • 1/2 cup fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 2 cups kale
  • 1/4 tsp spirulina powder

2. Quercetin

A natural anti-histamine (who knew there was histamine in many of our foods?); Suzy recommends 500 mg 2-3 times daily

3. Avoiding certain foods

  • Barbeque sauce causes histimine to trigger, which casues inflammation
  • Dried fruit contains sulfates and sulfates increase histamine in your body
  • Pumpernickle bread: anything that has been fermented can cause the release of histamines in the body.

4. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is known to relax the blood vessels; take 500 mg when you feel a headache coming on

I can’t wait to get my copy of Suzy’s new book, Headache Free, Relieve Migraine, Tension, Cluster, Menstrual and Lyme Headaches. Pharmacist Suzy Cohen has seen headaches of every sort and helps you uncover the hidden cause. Is it a hormonal imbalance, infection or food allergy? Is it a nutrient deficiency? Are your estrogen, testosterone and thyroid hormones in balance? What about neurotransmitters? The latest research is at your fingertips with this easy-to-read book. Cohen offers hundreds of solutions to end the pain including herbals, vitamins, minerals, medications, teas and much more!

    Nice job!
The juice is easy enough to do at home. We always seem to have those ingredients in- house. 🙂

Wow, not the BBQ sauce! I’m with T on that one, cuz this Southern girl needs BBQ in my life! I’ve sacrificed wine (except special occasions!), but I draw a hard line at BBQ, lol! I’m going to find some Peppermint oil this week, too! And I’ve tried other migraine smoothies with pineapple, but not this particular mix. And I bet is gonna be great for summer. Thanks Lady!

I have to read up more on the BBQ sauce. I prefer to make my sauces from scratch so we shall see what ingredient is the actual trigger. And I must use peppermint oil. Been using lavender oil but I have peppermint oil in the pantry. Great segment and that pink sweater is gorg!

Aww thanks so much MJ! I actually tried to peppermint oil this morning because I woke up with a headache, and after I woke up again it was gone. So I’m going to stick with it. And yes, it would be interesting to know which ingredients specifically trigger the histamine. Let me know if you figure it out!

I had never heard of it either Julia. I haven’t tried it yet because the peppermint oil has worked a good 98% of the time that I’ve used it as soon as I feel a headache coming on 🙂
