Motivational Monday: The Scars Will Heal

If you follow me on social media (which you really should 😉 ), you would’ve seen that I recently revisited my love for roller skating. I’m talking about old school, real roller skates, not the roller blades (imposters). I had been talking about getting some roller skates for a couple of years. But it wasn’t until we took our girls out on a gorgeous Spring day to ride their skates, that the itch came back full force.

This was the first time they got to really break them in. But they had been practicing in the basement all winter long LOL. They are definitely way better skaters than I was at their age. Actually…I didn’t know how to skate at their age.

They were having so much fun but they wanted me to join them. So I did what any momma would do: I went out and got me a new set of wheels!

Well, yesterday was another gorgeous day. So we took advantage of it because around here, we have to take it while we can. We got our roller skates on and started rolling around the neighborhood.

My daughter kept falling…she had at least 5-6 falls. Luckily she didn’t get too hurt and there weren’t any scrapes. So I kept reminding her why it was so important that they wear elbow and knee pads, as well as their helmets. I’m sure there would’ve been some blood without them. But she got discouraged after about the fifth or sixth fall and was getting ready to go take her skates off.

When I asked her why she wanted to stop skating, she told me because she kept falling, and she didn’t want to fall anymore. Being the person I am, I wanted to encourage her and hopefully keep her from quitting for that reason.

I explained to her that it does hurt when you fall. But I also shared with her how many times I fell when I was learning how to skate (more times than I can count). I told her how many scrapes and cuts I got from trying to teach myself how to skate, which are now scars. But I told her the best part: the scars will heal. I shared with her that it took me a while to learn how to skate without falling because I had to keep practicing. I had to keep getting up even when I wanted to quit. But every time I got hurt, it never lasted. It was only temporary.

So much to my excitement, she decided to keep skating with me. She told me that it will be okay if she falls because the scars will heal.

And just like in life when we get knocked down by situations or circumstances, the scars will heal. It may not be right away, but they will definitely heal.

How do you keep your kids encouraged and motivated when it comes to something that discourages/frustrates them?

I love how turned one small thing into a learning experience that will impact her for a life time. I too look for those teachable moments. So profound, yet so simple. I need to get my skates on too.. sun is out 🙂

I love this, we had a similar talk with our son when he was learning to ride his bike. I had man stories of learning to ride my bike in the Bronx and falling down. I fell to the ground, into cars, trash cans and more. I told him its like a badge or honor as a kid. lol Its not right if we don’t have those stories but they make our victories even more rewarding.

I need to skate, its been a long time.

Thanks Michellette! Oh yes, I definitely got a bunch of scars from trying to learn how to ride a bike too LOL And we didn’t have elbow and knee pads then haha. Let me know when you want to get together for a skate on the town 😉

Beautiful! I myself was a roller skater (loved it by the way) when I was younger. I actually taught myself how to skate and I loved every moment of it. As a kid, the roller rink was like THE place to go haha! So cool you are enjoying this with your girls…idk if kids these days appreciate roller skating the same way we did growing up!

Thanks Olivia! I taught myself as well, and couldn’t get enough of it even with the scraped knees and elbows. LOL My girls really love skating and have become so good at it so quickly, so I’m excited to share this pastime with them as well 🙂 BTW: the little girl in the picture shares your name 😉

Yeeesssss! I definitely remember the roller skating rink being the “cool thing to do” with my friends outside of school. We had so much fun. I definitely want to bring that same joy to my own kids 🙂

Love the lesson that you taught your girls and you’re right after time our scars will heal. That’s a lesson that they’ll never forget and can apply to other areas of their life. And like you I love roller skating and I even own my own pair (mines are black). I haven’t used them in awhile so you just reminded me to pull them back out. Enjoy roller skating with the kiddos.

Thank you Siobhan! This is something I wish I was taught early on in life, that’s for sure! LOL. The pair I had when I was a kid, and taught myself to skate with were black. I actually wanted to get a black pair (with purple wheels of course), but the store didn’t have any in my size. And I was too impatient to wait 🙂
