Princeton Parker and Lance Gross Talk Tips on Raising a Dreamer #ddaDisney

As many of you already know, I had the pleasure of being invited to Disney World last week to cover the Disney Dreamers Academy hosted by Steve Harvey and Essence Communications. Earlier in the week I shared some tips on being a dreamer that all parents and children should know.

What I saw beyond the dynamic speakers and accomplished celebrities was the fact that they all had something in common: they all had a dream, and in some way, shape or form, they were raised a dreamer or had something to share about how to raise one. They had concrete examples and experiences for what helped shaped them into the people they are today.

As a mom, I am always sharing with my kids the importance of dreaming. But I absolutely love Princeton Parker and Lance Gross’ tips on raising a dreamer:

Here’s what Princeton had to say:

I’ll reiterate how important of a role in my story. I started public speaking at two and speaking at four.She told me something when I was very young and it’s been the pillar, I’ve never forgotten: she said take advantage of every opportunity. That’s something she instilled in me.

My word to parents (I’m just a child who’s been raised by great ones): for our parents to not switch their positions when our dreams are more radical than our parents’ concessions. What happens is we hear our parents say, dream big! But what our parents really mean is dream within these five categories. When we come with something outside of that, it’s usually met with some resistance. And what we’re doing, we’re watching a lot more than the words. We’re watching for facial expressions, we’re watching to see if that embrace will still be there when our dreams are a little avant-garde. Keep that same level of enthusiasm when their dream is out of the normal conception.

The other thing that’s important for parents to continue to do as I grow older, is I need less and less about what I can do, and more about how to overcome what I fail at. Sometimes parents stop at the narrative of what we can do, and unknowingly create a level of pressure that we can’t live up to. Instead, saying this is what you can do, you can go all the way up to here. Now, let me tell you the reality of the journey. I’ll share with you my mistakes and let you know that’s not the end all, be all. Because no one ever shares how real those mistakes are, we feel that it’s just us. Just let them know they can. Encourage the journey – the good and the bad.

My parents really instilled in me the value of hard work. They really made me believe that I could do anything. I remember in the first grade that my parents were told I wasn’t built for college. That was the first grade. And look, I have gone on to graduate from Howard University in four years, with a scholarship. That just proves, that’s just one of the examples that you can do anything you put your mind to.

It’s amazing every year, this is the third year for me. We’re here to inspire them and let them know their dreams can become a reality as long as they work hard for it.
